John CLEMENS, sailmaker of St. Louois MO was born mid-ocean while his parents John and Julia CLEMENS were fleeing Cosica for St. Bartholomew Island West Indies. There John Senior died, possibly in prison. Young John as a teen signed on as a ship's cabin boy, he survived a shipwreck. Later moved to St. Louis, MO where he had a sailing loft and became quite prosperous. He married Catherine DOERR from New Orleans and Alsace Lorraine, FR. Their children were:
Mary E. b. 1837, d. 1918, m. Mr. Sommers
John Jr. b. 1839, d. 14 Oct. 1892
Alexander b. 1841, d. 23 July 1906
Ellen B. (mine) b. 23 April 1847, d. 26 Dec 1932 Leavenworth, KS, m. A. John West
Julia C. b. 1850, d. 19 May 1926, m. Frank E. King.
