Clemens Family Genealogy Forum

When I started researching my genealogy this was one of my motivations to keep going whenever I hit a brick wall. My grandma always told me that Samuel Clemens, Mark Twain, was a distant relative of hers. Her mother's maiden name was Clemens.
The first bit of bad news I received was that there are no direct descendants of Samuel Clemens. None of his children ever had a child that reached adulthood - hence, no more descendants. I still had hope that I could flank the family tree and find a common ancestor and still be able to stake a claim in being related to Mr. Clemens even if I were a ninth cousin 15 times removed.
The second shoe to drop in my search was to find out that Samuel Clemens line appears to come from England. I found several sites that show his lineage back to 16th century England - my Clemens are German Mennonites. There is still a remote chance of finding Clemens that migrated from one area to the other but probably not in my life time.
Hope I didn't discourage anyone too badly. On the bright side, if any of you can trace your roots back to the English line of Clemens there is still hope. This information will help you by directing you to look for a less direct route to tracing your ancestry to a common ancestor to Samuel "Mark Twain" Clemens, even if it's Adam and Eve.
