Well I didn't think I'd be posting a 3rd message
for you. I happened to look at INDEX for 1930 Texas
Census for someone else.
And wow, this may be the Ancestor you were
inquiring about.
However you were saying late 1800's.
Maybe you really mean later 1800's... but
I still think I have Traced your line,
I'll start with what I found in 1930:
IN the 1930 CHEROKEE COUNTY, TEXAS Census
But there is a:
ALVAH P. CLEM age: 44
HE is BORN: ILLINOIS (says his parents
are born: ILLNOIS)
married to: Annie V. (age: 34 or 38)
Children:
GLADYS (age: 17-born: TX)
ROY (age: 13 - born: TX)
Judith (age; 5 - born: TX)
Florence (age: 3)
Shirley (age: 2)
step-son -------------> Newman? Nicholas (maybe 7 mos old)

ALVAH P. & ANNIE CLEM live near
EUGENE CLEM (age: 70 ------BORN Ill.)
says his FATHER born: VA./Mother born NY)
wife:
MARIAM (age: 64 --------BORN: Illinois)
says her Father born: Ohio and Mother born: NY)

Cherokee County Texas is not far away from
where Troup, Texas is. I think Troup TX is in
SMITH County.

I went to ROOTS.WEB and clicked on the
Worldconnect Family Tree search (on the HOME PAGE at
rootsweb.com) and do a search for: Clem, Eugene
and keep in mind that guy is born around: 1860 in ILL.
(because I think that other Clem's living beside
Alvah P. & Miriam Clem are HIS parents)
SO I find at ROOTWEB.COM a person has submitted
info on a EUGENE CLEM born about 1858 ILL
HIS parents: Michael Clem b: 1833 - VIRGINIA ****
married: LUCY Underwood
CHILDREN of Michael & Lucy CLEM
1. EUGENE b: 1858
2. ALVAH b: abt. 1861
3. Jane
4. Etta
5. Phebe
6. Nora
