If they were stictly a shipping company, CLELAND may have taken the land in Amelia Township as part of a debt settlement with John LLOYD; however, I was hoping to find a bit more as to what they might have been trading in the area of midstate SC.

I do think that Amelia Town might have been at the upper limits of water transport on the Santee River--perhaps CLELAND was actually "shipping" up the river (as well as across the sea).
Do you know with what religion CLELAND was affiliated? (Presbyterian?) (Congregationalist?)
Do you know where the PERRY family (of his wife) was located in SC?(I've been looking at two different areas; but, so far, I have not been able to determine which John PERRY.)
