I have run across the name Clegg spelled several different ways, including Cleg, Clagg, Claig, Clogg, Klegg, etc.

I think the difference came when most people couldn't read or write, and the people who were either taking census, or writing legal documents spelled the name the way they heard it. And that depended on who was pronouncing the name.
