I just today found out that my husband's gg grandfather, Thomas Clegg, was born in Baltimore (previously we had thought Ireland or Canada). This information came to us by way of a copy of the 1861 UK census, where he, as a 38 year old, listed his place of birth as Baltimore, American Citizen. The children of Thomas Clegg and Margaret McAdams (m 1855 in Brooklyn, NY) are Mary Martha Clegg, Margaret Ellen, Alice, and Thomas Adams Clegg. Mary Martha was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1856, and the others were born in Stepney England. Thomas Clegg died in Stepney in 1864 two months after the birth of his fourth child. Margaret McAdams Clegg remarried and came back to Brooklyn, NY. The Clegg children and descendants are buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn, in a plot owned by Joseph Clegg, registerd in 1902. Joseph, however, isn't buried there, and we don't know who he is!! Any help in connecting our Thomas would be appreciated! I've got lots of notes on Clegg's in Brooklyn, NY in the 1850's and later, haven't been able to connect any of them to our Thomas though I suspect some of these Cleggs are related. Thomas' business was shipbuilding, and many of the Cleggs in Brooklyn at this time are shipwrights or carpenters as well... thanks! -C Brevis
