Especially with such a common name, it's important to indicate approximate years and a place. Ideally, put this in the subject line of your message. Even an approximate place like "Southern US" is better than wondering what country is involved.

It sounds to me like your best bet would be to talk to the aunt/uncle you mentioned.

The Charles Edward Clegg that I know about was born in Connecticut and died young in Schoharie or Delaware Co, NY. Oh: since this was in the 1850s and 1860s, he's probably not the fellow you're looking for :)
