I have run across the name in a few very old records, but not anything recent. I assume that through time the all began to spell it the same way, but I don't know.

It is my understanding that the "clan" came from the Wakefield England area. There is even a Clegg Hall(Castle) Estate there.

There are records of some Cleggs coming to the new world in the 1600's through PA, NY, & VA. The Group that I am from came to VA, and then the seemed to go to SC>GA>MS>LA>TX.
There was a group that came i during the 1800's and traveled west, mostly to Utah.

We do seem to be a relatively small family, but I have been in touch, through e-mail, with Cleggs from all over the world, including England, Canada, South Africa, Australia, Scottland, all across the US.

I do have several Clegg's in my database from the Tyler TX area.

My Web page has much more info on the Clegg family history and a link to my Family Tree Maker web site which contains a lot of names.
