Hi Marilyn,
From recollection, there is some agreement that the Scottish 'Clelands' derived from the Germanic 'Kneland'. There are a few people on the Clan Cleland website forums that talk about 'Kneeland's - so that might be a good point to start..
Our branch - the 'double e' Cleelands are derived from the single e cleelands, and

John Clelland Hocknull runs the site, and is quoted at one point saying "All Clelands, Clellands, Knelands, Kneelands, Cleelands, Cleilands, Neilands etc. are related and come from the original stock sometime in the 13th cent. in South East Scotland.
