Hi Maryse: My great great grandfather was Patrick Cleary from Kilchrist, county Clare. The following is from a written family record his son, John, wrote in 1878. Where do you fit into the family? Peter O'Cleary resided with Murrough O'Brien, his son Patrick Cleary married Honora O'Flanagan of the County Galway, by whom he had seven sons, two of whom removed to the County Limerick, two others to some part of Leinster, one emigrated to Lord Baltimore's colony to Maryland, the two last remained in Ballycorick, Parish of Clondagad. The youngest son, John, married Bridget O'Reidy of Kilmichael. John died soon, leaving but one male child, Patrick, who afterwards married Anne (Scanlan) De-Wingfield whose issue were four sons and two daughters. Three of the male issue died young, the remainder of the family, including the parents, emigrated to Canada in 1842, where John, the only male, got married to Bridget (Gallagher) O'Loughlin, of Kilmaley, County Clare. Catherine got married to Michael McMahon of the County Limerick. Mary, the youngest, got married to John Baile of the Queens County, all of Ireland. All of the last named families removed to Shefford, Lower Canada, in 1845, where Patrick died in 1873 in the eightieth year of his age. His widow died the following year in Michigan with her daughter Mary. John was called to the Commission of the Peace in 1863, for several years before and after fulfilled with distinction every office of trust, honour and emolument in the Township of Shefford, both for Church and for State. His issue was four sons and three daughters, his oldest Anne born May 15, 1845 died June 1846. The second, Thomas L. born May 3, 1847. The third, Michael born April 11, 1850. March 27, 1878 Thomas Wingfield, Ditchingham, Co. of Norfolk, England, was of my mother's ancestors. J. Cleary If you have any more questions on this family feel free to ask. I don't know what ship they arrived on, but from an old newspaper item it was stated that they landed in Quebec City, remained in quarantine there for 10 days, then proceeded to Montreal. At the time they left Ireland Patrick Cleary came from Kilchrist, county Clare,Ireland.Kilchrist (Kilchreest) is an old Civil Parish situated in South-West Clare which is to-day known as the ecclesiastical Parish of Ballynacally. In the Tithe Applotment Books, Patrick's total holding was 12 acres. The property was situated in the townland of Burren. A townland being the smallest rural division of a Parish. The townland of Burren is sited about 2 miles West of the little Village of Ballynacally, Barony of Clonderlaw. Hope this helps. Roderick Cleary Ingram. Notify Administrator about this message?
