I'm still looking for information about my Great great grandmother Josephine S. Clayton. She was the daughter of Charles C. Clayton (b. abt. 1801 NJ) and Sarah (Unknown maiden name, also of NJ).
Josephine married Charles A. Herbert abt. 1880. Both are buried in Mapelwood Cemetery in Freehold, NJ. I have extensive research on the Herbert side, but am searching for information about the Claytons.
Josephine had two sisters: Rebecca (b. abt. 1854) and Cornelia R. (born 1859 and died 1914 according to headstone in Maplewood Cemetery in Freehold, Monmouth County, that reads : Cornelia R. Clayton wife of George Van Steenberg").
Josephine also had a brother named Ellison L. Clayton who is found on the 1880 US Census for Monmouth Co. NJ (in the home of his widowed mother Sarah), at age 28, with young wife Eva and sisters Rebecca and Cornelia. At this time Josephine was living in the home of her in-laws William Dey Herbert and Margaret Denise, the parents of her husband Charles.
I have found another Ellison Clayton, but his age suggests that he may be an Uncle of the younger. The elder Ellison (1809 - 1875) was married to a Lydia Leffertson (1815 - 1882), and had daughters (according to shared family headstone) named: Harriet A. (1841 - 1892); Johanna (1849 - 1914); Elizabeth (1844 - 1913); Margaret (1838 - 1921) and there is a fifth name listed, but dates suggest she may have been a grandaughter named Dena I. (1873 - 1947). I believe this headstone is also in Maplewood Cemetery, but when I visited there I could not find it.
If anyone has a line of information about this branch of Claytons please respond. I've been searching for about seven years now.
