Gary,

Jane Claypool Peppers daughter to James & Margaret (Dunbar) Claypool of Hardy, WV, was the maternal g-g-g grandmother to my grandmother Louise. Louise never knew this during her lifetime. But she did indeed make that serendipitous statement to me about George Washington’s cobbler.

Was John Claypoole clearly related to the Hardy WV Claypool line? It appeared so, from what I could discover online. On the other hand, I understood that GW ordered all of his foot gear from abroad. But the war must have impacted imports and replacement/repairs must have been done state-side at some point. We’ll probably never know the rest of the story. And yet - who could have dreamed that the internet and DNA research would blow open new doors for genealogists and historians in the way it has?

Serendipity, indeed!
