The only information we have on the Clayborn family is from the 1880 census of Fremont Co., Colorado. They were living with a family by the name of Wallen, the wife Amanda was a Clayborn. The husbands name was Newton.
Listed with the family is John Clayborn father Age 70 born in Virginia, Thomas Clayborn Age 32 born in Kentucky, James Age 24 born in Kentucky, Sarah Age 19 born in Kentucky, Frank age 17 born in Kentucky. Amanda Clayborn Wallen was 31 at the time of the census. Mary Emma Clayborn Purcell and James Purcell divorced Dec of 1890. She married Hamilton Smith and they were living in Gunnison, Gunnison Co., Colorado in the 1900 census.
She had three children with James Purcell,
James born 1885, Charles born 1888 and Emma born 1889.
I believe that John Clayborn is the father of Mary Emma and James. It is possible that James went back to Indiana for a while and while there your grandfather was born. Do you know if James died here in Colorado, if you think he did I will try and find a obituary. If you would like to send me your information that would be great. We don't have much more information other than what we have told you, we are still searching trying to verify information.
