Clay Family in North Carolina

I am searching for any information about John Jake Clay, born abt. 1827 and died in 1860 ( McDowell Co., NC). He married Abigale Padgett prior to the 1850 census. They are listed in the Washington Co, TN census but had moved to McDowell Co by 1857, according to tax lists. Is he one of the Clay (Klee) family who came from Germany and settled in Lincoln Co, NC? I can find no record of either of them before 1850. I do know that he was a blacksmith. Thanks for any help.
