Clay Family Genealogy Forum

Boy, would I love to hear from some old-timers right now, but those chances are slim to none. Especially Roger Bailey, Caroline Redding or Jane Bearse Everett. Nine years ago, Roger and Caroline had a conversation in this Forum about some Clays born ca. 1810 in TN who then moved to Harlan Co KY. See my post #3927 & 3928. I've been trying to fit my Lavina Clay b1804 with their ancestors--Elizabeth, John and Elijah Clay, and trying to find their parents. Roger seemed to think, according to his family history, that these Clays were part Indian. Lavina Clay's death record cites her father's name as Henry Clay and says no more. So I started looking through Ancestry's records under Henry Clay Hawkins County Tennessee
1770 and on page 122 I found the Tennessee Cherokee Census of 1835. Living in Turtle Town TN is Henry Clay. Some of these Cherokee names are spelled out phonetically and many are English names. This is still a bit of a stretch and proves nothing yet and opens the door to a lot more work, but here we go! There's a modern Turtle Town TN in the S.E. corner of the state almost directly south of Hawkins Co. Is there anyone out there that can shed some light or that knows the story of Elizabeth Clay, the witch? I've only seen references to it. I've learned a little about researching Indians--once you pass the early 1800s, the records stop dead. Still I'm hopeful and some of these eastern Tennessee counties were created in the 1790s, so there's a chance of some records surviving. So how about it? Any old-timers still looking? Any new ones like myself have anything to add? Thanks for listening. P.S. None of these old-timer e-mail addresses still work.
