The family story has it that William Clay (DOB September 28, 1786) moved to Venango County in the early part of the 19th century. He purchased 236 acres from one Miles McCabe. The survey for this tract was recorded on May 20, 1807. The first marriage was indeed to one Mary Stewart. Between them they had two daughters, Margaret and Mary. It was said that Margaret never married, but that Mary took the hand of one William Irwin. Their children are listed as: George, James, and Rueben all of Clinton Twp. William Clay’s remarriage took place in 1818 to Annie, the daughter of adjoining farmer George McCool. The children of this marriage were: Nancy 1822, David 1824, George W. 1826, Cyrus 1828 (one of my directs), and William Jr 1830 (who passed away at 19).
