A biography of George W. Clay, MD, Malta, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 968 & 969. George was born, 18 Feb 1872, son of John and Mary (Henderson) Clay. Children: Bert (owner of a fishing fleet in Canada), Dr. George W. (Malta, MT), Nellie (Mrs. Russell Thompson, Wallacetown, Ont.). George grew up & was educated in Wallacetown and graduated from St. Thomas Collegiate Institute. For six years he taught school in his native community, then completed his medical studies at Western University, London, Ontario, in 1899. He located to the new town of Malta, MT, and opened his office in the drug store, becoming a partner with the owner, R.W. Garland, and becoming half owner of the stock. Dr. Clay prospered and became an extensive land owner, vice president of the First State Bank of Malta, vice president of the Bowdin State Bank, and the Dodson State Bank. He was treasurer of Malta and for a number of years health officer and county physician. In 1912, he was elected to represent Valley County in the state Legislature. In 1914, he was elected to the state Senate. On 22 Jan 1902, Fulda, MN, Dr. Clay married Miss May Price, born in Fulda, 5 May 1882, daughter of John R. Price. She came to Malta as a teacher in Aug 1899. Mrs. Clay died in 1908, leaving no children. I am not related. Notify Administrator about this message?
