The only information I have on Sobrina Jane Clay is as follows: Sobrina- born 1803, St. Charles, MO; died about 1879 in Oregon. She married Henry A. Russell b. 1797 in St. Charles, MO. Married about 1818 in St. Charles. They had 7 children. In birth order: John B. L. Russell b. 1819, Sarah Merchant b. 1820, James Clay abt. 1822, Joseph K. abt. 1824, Erasmus Darwin abt. 1826, Henrietta A.H. abt. 1828, and Barsheba b. 1831. Her parents were James Clay and Sarah Hancock. She crossed the Oregon Trail in 1850 with the Zumwalt party. Her daughter, Sarah Merchant was married to John Hancock Zumwalt. There are some verbal histories in our family that state Sobrina was part Native American, and that her daughter Sarah Merchant was a first cousin of Henry Clay and related to Andrew Jackson. (I have not been able to substantiate any of this.) I have much information on the Oregon family. This is my mother’s direct line. However, I have nothing more on Sobrina’s family or her ancestors and would be interested in some of this. I have visited the pioneer cemetery in Oregon where Sobrina is buried, have pictures of her gravesite, and both of my own parents are now buried there as well. Many generations of my family have been buried there over the years. Thank you Shirley and I look forward to any information you might have to share. - Joyce Notify Administrator about this message?
