I am looking for Native American Clays who ended up in Indian Territory (Oklahoma) by the mid to late 1800's, presumably as a result of removal. My tradition has that we are Cherokee, but I wonder if it could be wrong. My great grandmother was Fanny Mary (aka Frances Marie) Clay born in the 1870's, we think, married in Temple Texas in 1890 and lived the rest of her life in Texas, mostly Fort Worth area. Her married name was Irby. She had siblings, including one named Frank. All we know of her mother's name was that in 1907 she was Mrs. F.M.Clay and living with her son's family in San Angelo. We don't know if the F.M. were her initials or her husbands. Can we link up in any way? We were all raised to know ourselves as Indian, not part Indian, but we would very much like to figure out at what point and where the first intermarriage took place and from where they came to Indian Territory.
