Irene,
Have just obtained a copy of Lydia Clay's marriage Certificate from UK. Unfortunately it does not add much to my searches of family background, except that it confirms that she married William Davies at St Lukes Church, Liverpool, County of Lancaster, (established church) 31st May 1862, and her father James (not Jacques as appears on death certificate - French) was a "household steward" and William's father was Robert Davies, a "Weaver".
Unfortunately unlike Australian certificates it does not refer to her mother's name, and her birth place.

However as it appears that as James was at the wedding it may help me to locate a death cert for him in UK.

Other enquiries of Canton Vaud show a Jacques Louis Timothee Golay m Jeanne Marie Monod at about the right time. Perhaps Clay was the anglicised verson of Golay.

Peter Bevan
