I'm hoping you can help me shed some light on my search. Do you have any connections between the Clay's and the Smith's?

My husband is Bruce Clay Smith
His father Virgil Clay Smith
His father Howard Clay Smith
His father William Smith (Wm Clay maybe?) who married a Sarah Whitmore.

If I were to take a wild guess I'd say that Clay is the family name somewhere down the line. Perhaps Sarah Whitmore's side of the family or maybe William's mother? Can you help with any of this?
