I too doubt his so called origins- Everyone seems to want to link him to JOHN CLAYE of Derbyshire, but acc. to the Old Parish Records of the Wooley Collection, JOHN and MARY CARLTON had 5 children: WILLIAM, THEOPHILUS, SUSANNA, MARY, and PENELOPE. No mention is made of a JOHN. Hope this helps. Vickie
