I hate to be a wet blanket, I believe Professor Allen Cabaniss is in error when he stated that Phebe Cabanis and Francis Belcher had a daughter Phebe who married Mitchell Clay. He never cited his source for this.Phebe Cabiness (daughter of Matthew and Hannah Clay Cabiness) married Francis Belcher in Granville Co, NC 23 Dec 1771. After Francis died she married Joseph Swinney 4 Jul 1791 in Franklin Co, Va. In 1818, they made out 2 deeds which mentioned Phebe's daughters and the 'children of her body'. They also referred to the estate of Francis Belcher. A daughter Phebe was not mentioned. It is possible that Phebe Belcher Clay died before Phebe Cabiness Belcher Swinney made out her two deeds. Another explanation may be thus: I have been exchaning information with other Phebe/Francis researchers and we think that Francis married Mary Cabines, sister to Phebe. After the death of Mary, Phebe and Francis went to Granville Co, NC to marry because there was a Virginia law that said that a man could not marry his dead wife's sister. Perhaps Mary and Francis named a daughter Phebe (after her sister). I noticed that Mitchell and Phebe Belcher Clay named a daughter Mary, but I didn't see any daughters named Phebe. There also seems to be another Phebe Cabiness and another Francis Belcher who married each other in Chesterfield Co, Va in 1740. I sure would like to find out more information about this. Perhaps they are related. I must say I don't have any information about the Clay family, so perhaps there is more conclusive information that ties Phebe Clay as the daughter of Phebe and Francis Belcher rather than Mary and Francis Belcher.
