Middleton Woods Clay was the son of John Clay and his wife Elizabeth Middleton Dickenson. They were married March 27, 1801 in Franklin Co., VA. Elizabeth Middleton Dickenson was the daughter of John Dickenson (first Surveyor of Franklin Co., VA) and his wife Isabella Woods and grandaughter of Robert Woods (first Sheriff of Franklin Co., VA) and his wife Elizabeth Middleton.
