Thank you very much for posting the marriage record of Martha Clay and John Montgomery as well as the will information. I think the Miller book I have must be in error in suggesting that our Martha Clay Miller's father was Edward Clay. Quoting from page 5 of the book, "Millersville and the Miller Family," by Helen Miller Penzel Ritgerod and Henry A. Ritgerod, published August 1939 in Fayetteville, AR: "Martha Clay was the third child of Edward Clay, brother of Reverend John Clay, and Magdalene Trabue. Although the name of Martha's husband is not given, she is PRESUMED (emphasis mine) to be the one whom John Miller married. At least, John and Martha may have thought enough of the connection with the Clay family to name one of their sons 'John Clay Miller,' POSSIBLY after the Reverend John Clay." I have now had it suggested to me by at least two other researchers that our Martha Clay Miller "might be a relative of Nicholas Clay, if not his daughter, who lived in North Carolina." John and Martha Clay Miller did, indeed, have a son named Nicholas. Also, John Miller, Nicholas Clay, and Solomon Clay all lived near one another in Lincoln Co., NC, before moving to Missouri. To strengthen this connection, John Miller is also mentioned in some of Nicholas Clay's records. I appreciate your help in getting me pointed in a different direction. Carol Bowman cbowman@frii.com
