This just in from the British College of Arms: "Though there is quite a lot in the College's official records on various families called Clay, (we) have not been able to find anything relating to a Sir John Claye knighted at the battle of Tewkesbury or a John Clay who was a "coal baron" in Wales in the reign of Elizabeth I. Certainly we have no grants of arms to these men, and there were no families recorded in the Visitations of the 16th and 17th centuries who claimed descent from them."
Rather depressing news, isn't it? However, the College of Arms official notes that "Sir John Clay is listed among those knighted in the field of Grafton beside Tewkesbury by Edward IV after that battle in W.A. Shaw's "Knights of England" (London, 1906), vol. 2, p.16"
Thus, seems like those interested in confirming/refuting the antecedents of the Ancestor may have to wait a while yet. To me, the College of Arms official was not quite clear by citing both of these references. Accordingly, I will continue the correspondence.
