This is from 'Clay':

Edward Clay was the son of John and Sarah (Watkins) Clay, daughter of Edward Watkins, Sr. John married (2) Mrs. Mary Bass - maiden name unknown).

Edward was born ca 1743 in Henrico Co., VA; died 1819 in Person Co., NC; Will dated 23 Nov 1819, probated 1819. He married ca 1764 Chesterfield Co., VA to Magdelaine Trabue, dau of John James Trabue and his wife Olympia Dupuy.

Edward married (2) ca 1817 probably Person Co., NC to Jane/Jean Dupuy.

Edward lived Henrico, Chesterfield, Charlotte and Lunenburg Cos., VA prior to moving ca 1775 to Granville Co., NC (became Caswell 1777 and Person 1791); was a member of the NC Legislature 1777-1779.

'Clay' shows only three children for John and
Sarah Watkins and Mary () Bass Clay:

1. John who married Elizabeth Hudson and was the father of Henry the statesman.
2. Edward as above.
3. Frances (Fanny) dau of second marriage, who married William Wooldridge.

John was the son of Henry and Mary (Mitchell) Clay. Henry was the son of Charles and Hannah (Wilson) Clay. Charles was the son of John Clay the immigrant and his second wife Elizabeth. The line has not been proved any further back. John the immigrant is TRADITIONALLY shown as the son of John Claye. Be careful of that word 'traditional'.
