Hi. According to information supplied (and presented to the Jamestowne Society in 1995 in a presentation) by Robert Clay, Archivist at the Library of Virginia in
Richmond, VA:

There are no reliable records of Immigrant John Clay's back ground or ancestry. (There was no such thing as a "coal baron" he says. And the claims of knighthood of earlier Clays are undocumented & probably false.

Moreover, Robert Clay asserts that giving Immigrant John the middle name Thomas also is an error -- a later genealogist misread John's mark, "I" (the old form of "J") and thought the "I" was a "T" and then assumed that the "T" stood for Thomas (I guess becausse many of the Immigrant's offspring were named Thomas).

I'd be very very interested to learn if anyone has documentation on the Immigrant's name and origins.

Cheers,

Ned
