Compiling the family history of the 12 children of SAMUEL and TABITHA CLAY. Currently almost 3,000 names in the database, including hundreds of collateral surnames.
SAMUEL CLAY, only child and heir of ABIA CLAY and SALLY SKINNER, was born c1780 in Virginia. Samuel married his cousin, TABITHA CLAY (daughter of JESSE CLAY and MARIUM ______), 1798 in Oglethorpe Co., Georgia. They had 12 children, all born in Georgia. The family migrated to Alabama by 1819. By 1840 several of the 12 children had moved on to Mississippi. This CLAY family history traces the descendants of the 12 children:
1. LEVINIA CLAY, b c1799, d by 1835 in Alabama. Married CHESLEY R. GUINN (Gwinn).
2. ABIA CLAY, b c1802, d 1856 in Lauderdale Co., Mississippi. Married MARY ‘POLLY’ WATTERS. Many descendants in Miss. and Texas.
3. HANNAH G. CLAY, b 1803, d 1882 in Kemper Co., Mississippi. Married JEREMIAH SAMUEL BEASON.
4. JESSE CLAY, b c1804, d after 1860; migrated to Arkansas c1840. Married SUSANNAH TUBBS.
5. SAMUEL CLAY, Jr., b c1805, d after 1870; migrated to Arkansas c1845, then to Van Zandt Co., Texas. Married TABITHA HAYNES.
6. STEPHEN W. CLAY, b 1806, d 1887 in Mississippi. Married (1st) NANCY JONES; (2nd) ELIZABETH ‘BETSY’ JONES. Many descendants in Miss.
7. WILLIAM WILEY CLAY, b c1808, d 1855 in Mississippi. Married LUCINDA SUSAN JONES.
8. TABITHA CLAY, b c1811, d after 1860; lived in Mississippi. Married (1st) WILLIAM C. COOKSEY; (2nd) JAMES DAVIDSON.
9. ROYAL G. CLAY, b 11 Sept 1812, d after 1860; lived in Monroe Co., Mississippi. Married JANE ELEANOR MCGRAW. Some of their children settled in Arkansas.
10. THOMAS JEFFERSON CLAY, b 1814, d 1880 in Mississippi. Married CLARISSA H. HANNAH. Two of their sons went to Kentucky.
11. OBEDIAH CLAY, b 21 Sept 1815, d 1881 in Mississippi. Married MARTHA NELSON GARY.
12. MARIUM G. CLAY, b March 1818, d 1849 in Mississippi. Married SAMUEL CLAY HATCHER. Many descendants in Miss.
