Peter Claxton - moved to Athlone in 1890s

My wife's maiden name is Claxton and she hails from Dublin, Ireland.

There is a family tradition that her great grand-father Peter Claxton came over from the Midlands in England in the 1890s when he would have been in his 20s.

He died in his eighties in the early 1950s.

He worked as a plasterer in Athlone all his working days.

Peter and William seem to be popular family names. I am not a professional geneaologist and really don't know where to start looking.

If anyone recognises this Peter Claxton and can provide some information to enable me to start researching the family tree this side of the Irish sea, I would be very grateful.

Gordon Wood

P.S. We were on holiday last year in Barbados and noted from the phone book that there was one Claxton on the island. Regretably we didn't have time to pay a visit and see if he and my wife were distantly related! Perhaps next time!!
