The first place to look,when doing genealogical research, is family papers, bibles (if any)birth records, death records, obituaries, insurance files, military records and anything else your elders can produce.
If that doesn't work, try the U.S. Census which may list your grandparents or great-grandparents, and you can follow the line back from there.
If they are recent immigrants, look for ships passenger lists and similar documents.
