Clawson Family Genealogy Forum

Not only is it possible that the Clawson's came from the Netherlands, which would have been the United Providence, but they also could have come from Germany and possibly Sweden or Switzerland. Learning the history of that region has confused the entire matter. I suspect that because of patrynomics, early "dutch" family naming system, that someone with the last name of Clawson, Claussen, Clauszen, etc.....all began being registered as one common spelling due to the fact that the "clerks" usually wrote the information (not the actual person that would have known). Read up on patrynomics, you will understand why someone will appear as (example) Peter Clauszen and also Peter Wycoff and Peter Clauszen von Schouwn.....it's pretty interesting but also confusing.....also, the Clawson line that settled in New Amsterdam are most likely from the Netherlands, Clawson's that settled in Pennsylvania are most likely from (what is now) Germany....followers of William Penn (Pennsylvania Deutsch) seeking religious freedom and refuge...Most Clawson's coming out of Pennsylvania and into Ohio were Quakers (followers of William Penn)......Hope this helps someone.
