After more than 50 years, I have not been able to prove that we are related to the Buccleuch family. The present Duke of Buccleuch is head of the Scott family line and we have some members of the Scott family that claim relationship to his family.
I searched the records of the Buccleuch and Scott family members who served with the army in the Netherlands and there are references to both families. I also have records where my fifth great grandfather Richard Buckelew served with the British Militia during the Rev. War and his name is spelled Buccleuch. I know that he couldn't write and the officer who wrote his name was probably spelling his name phonetically or spelled it the way it is spelled in England. His name was spelled Richard Buckelew in the will of his father George Buckelew who could write.
All of the records except the one that I mentioned above, spell our name Buckelew or other spellings with minor changes, i.e. Buckalew, Buckloo, Bucklew, etc.
