A supposition; the John Clawson and Mary Wheatley referred to by descendents is in actuality the parents of early Ohio settlers John, Garret, Thomas, Peter and Josiah. Their father would have been born about 1734 or before; interestingly a William and Thomas Wheatley were located in Fayette county, Pennsylvania very close to the abodes of the Clawson family. The Wheatley brothers came from New Jersey and had a sister named Mary Wheatley born 1730: http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?fayette::wheatley::858.html It is also reported Thomas Wheatley's wife was named Eleanor; possibly the namesake of Eleanor Wheatley Clawson: http://genforum.genealogy.com/wheatley/messages/447.html If so, a Garret, Sr. never existed. This would raise the question of the identity of the Garret Clawson who joined the militia in Maryland July, 1776 and having land in Harrison county, West Virginia about the same time. He is very possibly another child of Josiah Clawson of Hampshire county, West Virginia; noted in the below post. Josiah's brother Garrabrant also named a child Garret; the latter Garrabrant and son Garret both relocated and died in New York. The Garret in question could have died young; the land in Harrison county, West Virginia was evidently abandoned by 1778 as noted by this historical entry: http://books.google.com/books?id=J4QFK5LO-boC&pg=PA38&dq=thomas+clawson,+virginia&lr=&as_brr=0 Another supposition; John Clawson who married Mary Wheatley is the son of Garrabrant Clawson; the son of William Clawson. Garrabrant had two known sons; named William and John (most likely other sons and daughters do exist). Garrabrant and his brother could have been very very close siblings. Thomas named a son Garrabrant and they possibly married sisters. Garrabrant married Elizabeth Eastman and some researchers say Anne; wife of Thomas, was also a Eastman. Again, this is all supposition but the few pieces of hard data tend to fit the assumptions. Even so, a few more credible pieces of supporting documentation is needed. The John Clawson found in early Ohio records just might have blazed the trail for not only his own family but for his cousins as well. They all semed to have settled in areas close to where he was living at the time. Which raises another question, is the celebrated John Clawson from the Fayette county, Pennsylvania family or the Hampshire county, West Virginia family?
