I found a Thomas and Elizabeth Clawson in Ross county in the early 1800"s; Thomas is also listed in the 1820 Census. It would appear this is the subject Richard Clawson and Eizabeth Wilson. The following is from from the "History of Fayette County" by Diller, R.S.; Pub. Dayton, Ohio, Odell and Mayer, 1881: "William Clawson was born, May 6, 1836, and is the seventh child, and second son of William and Tabitha (Chambers) Clawson, of Ross County, Ohio, who were married, April 12, 1818, in that county. Grandfather Chambers was from Ireland. William Clawson, sr., was born, July 16, 1790, and died, March 2, 1852. His wife, Tabitha, was born, July 30, 1793, and died, February 2, 1866. John, Sarah, Nancy, Richard, Keziah,Ollie, and William, were the sons and daughters of Thomas and Elizabeth Clawson, grandparents of this subject. These were all born in Virginia, and came to Ohio in 1800, settling at Frankfort. William, sen., was the father of Strawder, Eliza, Elizabeth, Leeann,Ollie, Keziah, and William. They were all born in Ross County, Ohio, and where our subject lived to the age of nineteen, then he came to this county, near New Holland. His early education was limited by the disadvantages surrounding his early life, and his qualifications are more the result of business contact with a busy world, than of close study. Mr. Clawson was married, October 14, 1863, to Mary McCoy, daughter of James and Sophia (Beck) McCoy, of Ross County. She was born, September 20, 1845, and died, October 25, 1874, at the age of twenty-nine. She was a woman much esteemed, and her death was lamented by a large circle of friends. Mr. Clawson has had fair success as a farmer, and by his indomitable energy, has surmounted difficulties that would have overwhelmed the ordinary man. His farm, on the Columbus road, near Madison Mills, shows signs of careful management. He has been a successful stock breeder and shipper." There are marriages for all the children in Ross county with the exception of Richard and Keziah. Interestingly, a Keziah married a Benjamin Allen 11 April 1797 in Clark county, Kentucky. And, a Richard Clawson is also listed in this county in the 1810 and 1820 Census. Note: the Ross county marriages can be found on-line. I also came across a marriage in Berkeley county, Virginia for another Thomas; this Thomas married Hannah Rawlings 27 October 1794; this Thomas Clawson is most likey the Thomas of Montgomery county and Allen county, Ohio. Familiar Russell names associated with the family are also in the 1810 Census of Berkeley county. And, the noted William and Rachel Berryman as with the Russell families were also in Montgomery and Allen counties along side Thomas Clawson. This Thomas is most likly the son of one of Richard's brothers. It would further indicate Rachel is a sister of this Thomas and not the second wife of Richard as thought. Perhaps, Ed can place them with the correct brother of Richard. Notify Administrator about this message?
