After some 25+ years of "digging", this is what I have accumulated - input from many sources, and I'm sure I have not listed everyone who has helped me along the way - sorry. I would appreciate any input - additions to these three write-ups. I am a descendant of Charity Clawson/Hiram Young. Mary (Step-mother of Charity) 1850 Census - 65 yrs. born Virginia At the Buckland graveyard - Auglaize Co., Ohio - "Clawson, Mary, Wife of Josiah, died Jan. 11, 1853, - 70 years (for many years could not find Josiah's marker.) Then from a letter from Richard B. Walker - 15 Aug., 1990 this added info. In the fall of 1858 John Clawson with wife Ellen (Gregory) - 5 Jan., 1842/43 and Thomas Clawson with wife Laura (Lorey Gregory) - 5 Nov., 1846 moved with Josiah Clawson, Sr. to Whitefield Twp., Marshall Co., Illinois. All five of them are buried in the Sugar Grove Cemetery there. The Gregory clan had settled there ca. 1840/1858. Josiah Clawson (the father) is shown on his tombstone to have died either the 11th. or 14th of April 1859. - Age 89 yrs. - 3 mo. and 29 days husband of Mary who died Jan. 11, 1853 and is buried @ Buckland Cem., Logan Twp., Auglaize Co., Ohio - Aged 70 years. Charity Clawson (d/o Josiah & ‘1st wife’ Clawson) d. ca. 1846/1850 @ Wapakoneta, Ohio - m. 19 Feb. 1829 to Hiram Young in Shelby Co., Ohio by John Francis, J.P. – Src. History of Shelby Co., Ohio – page 157. Children of this couple as found in the 1850 census: * see note below Mary Young, age 4 – Elizabeth Young, age 17, and Issiah Young, age 7 were with the grandparents – Josiah Clawson, age 74 and Mary Clawson, age 65. Jackson Young, age 13 was with Thomas & Laura Clawson – his uncle. John Young, age 14 was with William and Maria Bodkins-age 34 – she his aunt. Robert B.Young, age 10 was with M.A., age 29 and Rebecca Murdock-25 – she his aunt. Evidently the Clawson clan divided up the children of Hiram and Charity after their untimely deaths before the 1850 census and made sure they all had a home. *Since Mary Young was living with her grandparents in 1850 and was listed as 4 yrs. old - Hiram and Charity must have both died between 1846 and 1850. Josiah Clawson, Sr. (father of Charity Clawson) b. 16 Dec.1769 in New Jersey - d. 11 Apr.1859 – 89yrs. 3 mo. 29 days, buried in Sugar Grove Cem., Whitefield Twp., Marshall Co., Illinois. – m. 1st to _____, - m. 2nd 13 Sep.1822 in Butler Co., Ohio to Mary Meeks . According to the 1850 census Josiah was born in New Jersey. Josiah and 1st wife had Josiah, Jr., Charity, Huldah, John, Israel, Maria, Isaiah and Thomas. Josiah, Sr. and Mary Meeks had Rebecca and Nathaniel. - per Rose E. Ray's letter 3 Apr.1989 - their ch. may have been Thomas; Josiah,Jr.; John; Susanna; Sarah; Mary or Maria; Catherine; and Nathaniel.***** (Since the Clawson's took All of Hiram Young's and Charity Clawson's children after their untimely deaths - I would also include Charity) MCB. These conclusions by Rose must have come from those names appearing in the sale of the land that Nathaniel willed to his brothers and sisters. *****I have come to the conclusion from my research that Josiah, Jr., Charity, Maria, John, Thomas, Rebecca and Nathaniel were(for sure)children of Josiah, Sr., because of the placement of the YOUNG children of Hiram and Charity (Clawson)Young after the untimely death of Hiram and Charity. In the 1840 Census a man 80/90 yrs. of age was living with Josiah,Sr in Moulton Twp., Allen Co., Ohio - later this area became Auglaize Co. (wish I knew who he may have been) Winona Garmhausen, gggranddaughter of the Josiah Clawson of Allen County, Ohio says that Thomas, Josiah, and Frederick came to Allen county sometime before Josiah Clawson, Sr. came to Auglaize Co., and that when her gr.gr.fathers estate was settled in 1845 there was some intercourse between the two families. 1850 Census Auglaize Co/Moulten Twp Visit 1030 ~~~- Josiah Clawson w/wife of Mary ~~~ Josiah Clawson 74yrs Farmer B.
