I came across the following DRC entries at Flatbush for William Clawson. It would indicate William was indeed married to Elsje Gerritsz Croezen and had a son named Gerrit; note his brother Gerebrandz was witness.
Gerebrantz's son Meyndert is also recorded here with another brother Arien as witness. Most interesting is the 1698 entry reflecting Claes Cornelizen assuredly had a son named Gerrit; brother to William, Gerebrandtz, Arien etc.
It is quite apparent the spelling depended on the current recorder's ear; and, his wisdom of pen, quill and phonics to parchment:-); Classen, Klaas, Claas, Claasz, etc. Enjoy, Rich Closson - the real spelling:-)
