Bernie -- You are correct about Daniel Claus and his proximity to the Mohawks; however there has never, to my knowledge, been any question of intermarriage with the Mohawks on the part of Daniel or his descendants. The Claus family I am part of is descended from a Mohawk named Claus, fathered by a Dutch settler of Schenectady, a historical personage listing in many books. This is according to Barbara Siverstsen, the authorof a genealogical history of 17th and 18 century Mohawks titled Turtles, Wolves, and Bears: a Mohawk Family History.Though the Claus family is not listed in the book, Barbara was kind enough to tell me that she believes this is the Mohawk Claus family origin. The first Indian with that name was Laurence, born 1722.He and his sons are mentioned in some of the Johnson Papers.
