My GGG grandfather William Clarkson married Sarah Ann Nicholson in Poplar, London in 1831. They emigrated to Wellington (then Port Nicholson), New Zealand in 1839. I am trying to trace William's family
The family story goes, that Sarah Ann was a servant who he fell in love with and then married, much to the dissaproval of his parents. He was so angry with them, that he cut himself off from them. As a result, we have no idea who his parents were, or even whereabouts in England he was born. The family story also says that his father was a prison governor - but so far we have no proof of that.
We know that he was a constable with the Metropolitan Police in London in 1833. And that after that, he became a general merchant.
Does anyone know of a William Clarkson born around 1804, possibly in London, or of any Clarksons who were prison governors?
