Dear Mr. Dill:

I am working on the genealogy of a branch of the Clarkson family that had its roots in Lancashire, and later London. It was a well known "recusant" family that remained Catholic at the time that Henry VIII and his successors required that English subjects sign an oath of loyalty to the protestant king as head of the Church of England. The family refused to do so and suffered greatly because of their loyalty to the Pope. Many priests and nuns came from this branch of the family.

A very good history of the Lancashire Clarksons can be downloaded at <www.faulkner-history.fsnet.co.uk/Clarkson_frame.htm> If you have any information on those branches of the Clarkson family that remained loyal to the Catholic Church, I would appreciate hearing from you. My direct antecedent who first came to this country was Thomas Michael Clarkson (1858-1905). His descendants married into mostly English or Irish American families: Gould, Meaney,O'Dea, Rafferty et al. Any non-Catholic partners converted to Catholicism as was the custom in the 19th and 20th centuries.
