Hi Mark
Hugh was my great grandfather. He was still in Charters Towers (far north Queensland) in 1989 as he had tosign the indentureship document for my grandfather (John William) when he became an apprentice as a Confectioner. John William was an apprentice for 5 yrs and then complted another 2 yrs. His "Master" was a JohnMcDonald, who was quite famous inthe colony's settlement as he was very much an instigator for the beginnings of the Trade Unions mainly for he mining industry up North. It was perhaps in this way that he had an association with Hugh Clarkin as you mention he was mining in this area. (Port Douglas is only 45 mins fromwhere I live in Cairns. Additionally, as I work for the Royal Flying Doctor Service I have had many occasion to fly over the "Lynd" area which is where Hugh's sister is (Catherine) is buried. Unfortunately I do not know if Hugh is also buried here. It is only recently that I have started to look at my ancestry, I am surprised I have come up with so much so soon. I certainly did not know I had an Irish connection. Would be very happy to speak to cousins.Regards Camille
