The facts (known as of this date) about Herbert CLARKE are these:
Herbert married Elizabeth PUTNAM 15 Jan 1758, St. Clement Danes, Westminster. Witness: Sarah CLARKE.
Herbert and Elizabeth CLARKE had five children:
1. Nathan, b. abt. 1758; buried 27 Jan 1765, St. John, Hillingdon, Middlesex;
2. Sarah, b. ?; married Thomas KING 26 Jan 1795 St. Dunstan in the West, London; 6 children; d. ?;
3. Elizabeth, chr. 21 Jan 1767, St. Ann Blackfriars, London; buried 26 Apr 1772, Hillingdon MDX;
4. Mary, chr. 09 Oct 1768, St. Ann Blackfriars, London; married Thomas BENSLEY jr., Uxbridge, MDX; 9 children; d. 18 Nov. 1846, Brighton Sussex;
5. Francis, chr. 19 Dec. 1770, St. Ann Blackfriars, London; buried 22 May 1772, Hillingdon MDX.
Elizabeth CLARKE died "aged 76", and was buried 18 Feb 1807, St. John Hillingdon, MDX.
Herbert CLARKE, "gentleman", was a button manufacturer, and lived at 55 Drury Lane, London. He also owned a freehold house in Uxbridge, Middlesex. He died "aged 77" 20 July 1808, and was buried St. John Hillingdon, MDX. He left an estate valued at 10,000 pounds.
Herbert had a relative named Sarah CLARKE, who witnessed his wedding. He also had a brother Jonas (who died between 1795 and 1807)and a sister Elizabeth HARPER (alive 1807).
A recent clue suggests a connection to a Thomas CLARKE. Several of the extended CLARKE family were associated with nonconformist churches.
Despite years of effort on the part of several descendants, so far it is not known when or where Herbert was born, or his parents' names, or anything further about his siblings. It is possible that he was connected to the button-making firm HERBERT & CO., of London and Birmingham.
