Denys Allen Clarke Sr. was my grandfather. My mother Was Bettie Mae Clarke Curtiss, born June 17, 1917 and died May 24, 2000. Denys Sr., known as Al, migrated from Canada to Los Angeles, Ca. and was an assistant to D.W. Griffiths along with his brother, Donald Clarke. Uncle Don was considered the genius of the two, and indespensible to Griffith. Grandpa served as an assistant director, a stunt man, and whatever else was needed. A small man, not much over 5' tall and weighing around one-hundred pounds Al was always the one, whenever anyone was moving, who carried the refrigerator, by himself, on his back. These were all steel, heavy, heavy boxes.
