Hi Donna,
There was a May in our family (DOB abt 1875)who was the daughter of Frances Clarke, but I believe her last name would have been Lewis since Frances, 2nd marriage was to a Lewis. I have located her in the 1880 Census-Charleston,SC, but have not been able to find any further records on May. Regarding William Clarke, my GGG Great Grandfather, he was married to a Jane??. I am having the same problem as you, since, we cannot seem to locate the parents of William, nor the parents of Jane. Part of the problem with Jane is that we do not know her maiden name. William, we believe is related to William Boone Clarke, who was married into the famous Holloway family of Charleston. I have searched through hundreds of records in Charleston, however, many of my family members (in the past) tried very hard to hide who they really were. For instance, our oral history tells us that Jane ??, was a Ravenel, by way of slavery, a fact that has been very difficult to trace. Perhaps if I could locate her death certificate I could find out more, but that does not always pan out either as I am finding that the death records do not always list the parents names.
