Robert McClelland Clarke was born at Lurgan Co Armagh in the north of Ireland 14 February 1892, one of six sons of Walter Clarke and Martha McClelland.

He emigrated to Canada, and in October 1914, very soon after the outbreak of the Great War, enlisted in the 16th Battalion Canadian Scottish.

He served with that unit in France and later, also in France, as a Lieutenant in the 19th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles.

Later he was posted to the 14th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles (Young Citizen Volunteers).

Afterwards he was posted to the 19th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, Newtownards, Northern Ireland, November 1917.

In April 1919 he was appointed Assistant Adjutant of the 3rd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles. He was demobilized June 1919.

He was at the battles of 2nd Ypres, Festubert, Givenchy, Messines and Paschendale Ridge, besides trench warfare.

Would Lucy Clarke, his grand-daughter, or any other kin of Robert McClelland Clarke, please contact me.

My grandmother Margaret Whiteside Clarke was one of his six sisters.

Simon Elliott
