Hello Susan,
I'm sending along a short list of material that may interest you.
clarke.genealogy.bonevich.com
Jeff Bonevich has put together some information on four generations of this Clarke family, ending with Joseph (1618-1694) and his children. A model website.
"The "Clarke" Families of Rhode Island" by George A. Morrison, published NY, 1902. If it is not available to you at a library it is viewable on line through Heritage Quest Online/ProQuest. This service is available for free at some libraries. A reprint of the book is available through NEHGS, and perhaps other publishers, for about $55.
The New England Historical Genealogical Register published an article, by George A. Moriarty, in Vol. 75 (1921), pgs. 273-301, on the English origins of this family. Although the Clarke material ends with Joseph other ancestral surnames are included. Available at libraries or the NEHGR website through subscription.
If the material by Morrison and Moriarty are not available to you please contact me at [email protected] and I will send copies of the material of interest (for free).
People have been creative over the years with Joseph. You would do well to carefully consider the following:
1. Any suggestion that Joseph's first wife has been identified.
2. Any suggestion that his second wife, Margaret, was daughter of Lawrence Turner.
3. The supposition that Laurence Clarke, born about 1679, was Joseph's youngest son. (Interestingly, Joseph had a first cousin names Laurence.)
You will find these claims all over the internet and in print. I know of no primary sources to confirm any of these ideas.
Good luck,
Tom Clarke
