Seeking information on family of Steven Clarke, landowner along the "Troy Road" or Watervliet Turnpike just north of the City of Albany. Clarke leased land to the State of New York for the newly organized "Idiot Asylum", Clarke's property along with a building known as the "Bulls Head Tavern" or Inn, owned by Steven VanRensselaer was made into the first facility officially recognized by the State of New York for the treatment of mental illness and other medical conditions thought to be related to mental illness at the time. The facility known as the Idiot Asylum was later moved to the City of Syracuse in 1855 to be more centrally located within N.Y.State as the demand for treatment of more patients grew. Any information on the family of Steven Clarke or his relationship with Albany NY or the Town of Watervliet or the Idiot Asylum would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Kevin Franklin, Historian, Town of Colonie, N.Y. www.colonie.org/historian or at the e-mail posted with this message. Thank You.
