Until the expulsion of the Acadians in the mid 1750's there were almost no English-speaking settlers in Nova Scotia (outside of Halifax) until the 1760's when the English government encouraged large numbers of New Englanders to settle here (google - New England Planters). The other group, were the settlers who arrived in Halifax around 1749-+ on the Cornwallis ships. The passenger lists of the Cornwallis ships are online at http://www.rootsweb.com/~canns/cornwallis.html Unless your John Clark was a New Englander, most early records will be through Halifax.
