Clarkes in Ballinasloe, Ireland and Bolton, Lancs
I'm looking for information on my ancestors who lived in Ballinasloe, Ireland and Bolton, Lancs. My great-great grandfather, Patrick Clarke, was born in Ballinasloe and was the son of a schoolteacher named Clarke(first name unknown). Patrick immigrated to Bolton, Lancs around the 184Os. We think he was married in Ballinasloe to a Ms. Gillespie who had been a ladies maid to the Bishop of Armagh. They brought at least 2 of their children with them, Emma Clarke and Joseph Clarke (who was a baby at the time). A third son, Francis Clarke either remained in Ballinasloe or returned there later and became a RC priest. Joseph Clarke married Martha Marsh (daughter of Martha Brooke and Joseph Marsh, both of Cheshire)in Bolton. They had 8 children, the eldest being Charles Allen Clarke and the youngest, Tom Clarke (my grandfather)who both became well-known journalists and authors.
