General(1,2,3,4,5): Joseph Clarke's Will
In Deed book 211,Goochland county, page 471,21 April 1813,we find the will of
Joseph.
In the name of God,Amen,I Joseph Clarke of the County of Goochland, being weak
of body, but thank God,of sound mind and intellect,do make and ordain this my
last will and testament in the words following:
Item: I give to my son,Elisha Clarke, the tract of land whereon I live with its
appurtenances to him,his heirs and assigns forever, with the request that he
shall bury me at the place which I have shown him,in a coffin of good plank one
inch thick in a common way.
Item: It is my will and desire that all the residue of my estate, consisting of
a crop of corn,a still, two sows and two shouts,my bacon and all the pots which
contain it,one-fourth part of a
crop of wheat now growing on my land,a mare and a colt, six head of cattle, one
calf, between Elijah Alvis and myself, two iron pots, one dutch oven, one frying
pan,a hoe,two or three chests, six earthen jugs, some with brandy, two or three
cidar casks,one cupboard,one table, furniture,twenty or thirty poultry,some
knives and forks, plates, dishes, basins, one coffee pot,a piece of cloth to make
me a suit of clothes,a bridle and saddle, one gun,my wearing apparel and
forty-two pounds in cash to be sold to my executors and the proceeds of such
sale, after paying my just debts,to be equally divided between children of
Elizabeth Alvis and of my deceased daughter,Eleanor Walker,my brother John
Clarke,Nancy Lane(Matt Lane's wife) and Thomas Green(we found where one Thomas
Green married a Clark. We do not believe her to be one of Joseph's children)
This bequest is made to my brother John because he is low in the world.
Lastly,I do hereby appoint Joseph Pollard,John Guerrant,Jr.,and Edmund Pollard
executors of this my last will and testament..................
Probated in Goochland County,Virginia,Court,Book 21,page 471 on 20 September,
1813.

November,1758:
Deed book 22,page 322 gives an account of the estate of Joseph Clarke returned
by Joseph Pollard, exe.,commences October 1813,The account was examined by court
commossioneers who state that after debts had been paid, ect., there was a
balance of $170.07 1/2,There were eighteen legatees which would entitle each
legatee to $9.44.It also appears that there was a suit--Goochland County
vs.Elijah Alvis, for the benifit of said estate. Recorded 20 January,1817.
The "Douglas Register" states that Joseph Clarke married Hannah Hutchinson,

General(6,2,3,4,5): In Deed book 24,page 62,9 October,1818,we find the transfer of the Property by
Elisha Clarke
Elisha Clarke and Elizabeth, his wife, of the County of Goochland sell to Charles
P. Martin of the County of Caroline for $1,938.00 a tract of land in the County
of Goochland on a branch of Beaverdam Creek, commonly called Horsepen Creek----
containing 155 acres by late survey. Recorded 17 May,1819.
Elisha, according to the records was preparing to move to Kentucky where his two
sons had already gone.
It seems that the 160 acres given to Elisha by his father,Joseph Clarke lost
five acres in an accurate and later survey.
